I’d like to start by offering my personal thanks to people who have offered support and sent me comments on my prior posts. Thank you!
Every writer has a different approach to their craft, and one of the things I pride myself on in my fiction work is a sense of “place”, Our protagonist and antagonist have to exist somewhere, and a “rural town in Montana” or “a city suburb” just doesn’t cut it for me. I may not get all the details right, but largely the settings will be based on my own experiences and travel (and yes – I realize how fortunate I am to be able to travel to these locations).
For my debut novel, our story takes us across Rome, Cassis in the South of France, New York, New Jersey and a thrilling climax in Bogota and Villavicencio, Colombia. For my next novel, the opening will take place in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and I will be traveling there shortly.
For me, it’s not enough to just “visit” a place. The action in thriller novels takes place in the small alleys, the dark corners, the small cafes, and the steamy apartments. I intend to spend some time simply sitting and soaking in the atmosphere, and I hope to be able to capture that for the research of novel #2.
Wish me luck!
