Stories in the little moments

Hello World,

One of my favorite story types to write are stories of ordinary people and the little moments in their lives that can mean so much.  There is such a richness to the world around us, and so many stories that (for our loss) will die with the protagonist, destined never to be shared.  Here are some true stories I have encountered recently that have a wonderful “life”” to them.

  • A small boy.  One of his earliest memories is riding with his father on a horse and cart into the American and RAF airbases in Southern England during WWII.  Selling meat and contraband and collecting castoffs to sell elsewhere.
  • A woman who has made a very successful career in Corporate America, leaving that world to start a mission around bringing love and happiness into people’s lives through permaculture.
  • The oldest child of an abusive mother, standing resolute in the path of anger to protect her younger siblings, without really realizing that’s what she is doing.

As AI creeps more and more into our daily lives, I fear the authentic storytellers will be replaced with some “imagined” version of these stories, which inevitably will be a “learned example” rather than an “experienced story”.  This is one of the reasons I write, and why what I write often has a basis is real life.  So we don’t forget these stories and “little moments”.

David.
